Artist Profile

For many years, watercolor media was my primary focus. My watercolor initiation began with a series of watercolor classes with Jackie Brooks (NWWS, AWS), and continued in workshops w/ Judi Betts, Catherine Gill, Don Andrews, Skip Lawrence and others.

Throughout the past decade, my art exploration turned toward the acrylic medium, and using mixed media in creating collage. Acknowledgements to Jacqui Beck and Barbara de Pirro, Seattle based mixed media artists, and Sue Jensen (Oregon artist) at the Creative Arts Community at Menucha, Oregon for the learnings and inspiration gained from their workshops. So many other NW artists have encouraged me to continue my explorations in this medium. I appreciate you all so much!

Artistic Philosophy and Process

In my paintings and collages, I delve into the intricate patterns and layered textures that reflect the essence of life across its various dimensions. My work seeks to illustrate the interconnectedness of all living beings and human-made structures, emphasizing the unity that underpins our diverse existence.

The creative journey often begins with a photograph or a compelling pattern of lines and colors, serving as a catalyst for inspiration. From this initial spark, I explore my collection of papers and materials to further develop the concept. This process resembles an experiment—while I am guided by knowledge of color theory and composition, the final outcome frequently reveals unexpected surprises, adding an element of discovery to each piece.

My primary palette consists of bright, warm hues that portray simplified figures, flora, landforms, ancient dwellings, and pictographs. Texture is achieved through the use of acrylic mediums and gels, while collage techniques incorporate paper, cloth, or other materials. Additional tools such as stamping and scraping are employed to enhance visual interest. The versatility of acrylic paints allows me to embrace imperfections—’mistakes’ are not setbacks but opportunities to incorporate new elements or directions into the artwork.

The act of creating—layering textures, applying bold colors, and embracing spontaneity—evokes a sense of joy and fulfillment. Each piece reflects a harmonious balance between deliberate design and intuitive experimentation, capturing the vibrant complexity of life itself.
